John Schonder Head Coach

Coach John Schonder has recently completed his second year with Richmond Swims, coaching both the Richmond Sailfish and the Richmond Plunge Masters teams. Under his leadership, we saw our teams grow beyond expectations and now boast a youth team with over 60 members and a masters team topping 65 members. We are pleased to have his great experience behind our teams and look forward to another great year.

John grew up and began his swimming career in Reno, Nevada. He swam competitively through high school and into college. He spent several years teaching and coaching age group swimming with the City of Reno Parks and Recreation Aquatics Department and the Reno Aquatics Club from 1995 through 2000. He was Head Coach for the Holy Names High School (Oakland) swim team from 2005 through 2007. Most recently, he served as Head Coach and Executive Director of the Oakland Barracudas (age group and Masters swimming teams) from March 2007 until December 2009. John is active on the Pacific Swimming Diversity and Outreach Committee, whose goal is to make swimming accessible to children in communities that have not had access to swimming. John holds a Level II Certification with the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), is trained as a massage therapist and is also a Certified Professional Trainer through Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.

Benicia Riviera Assistant Coach

Benicia’s love for the water began at eight months old with her father teaching her to swim at the Albany pool. She continued her swimming at El Cerrito High where she became inspired by her coaches. Becoming a certified lifeguard in 2001 during her junior year she worked for the City of Richmond. During her six years working for the city she became certified as a Water Safety Instructor. Looking to advance her experience she began working for The City of El Cerrito in 2004 as a Head Instructor and Head Guard. For five years she taught youth group lessons as well as beginner and intermediate adult classes. She created a pre-master class for adults looking to prepare for masters workouts and this is where her coaching began. From there she began coaching masters and assisting El Cerrito High School swim team with Junior Varsity swimmers. In 2010 she started working for The Jewish Community Center in San Francisco as an assistant Aquatic Manager. During her time at the JCC she helped their swim team to reorganize and rebuild their programs. In 2011 She started coaching for Richmond Swim Inc. working with both age group and masters swimmers.
